new book on virtual reference

Yesterday I received in the mail a copy of Virtual Reference Best Practices by M. Kathleen Kern (ALA, 2009!).

I haven't had the chance to read it yet (some silly VR software transition is getting in the way of just about everything these days), but flipping through I like the way it is organized.

Early books and other writing on virtual reference emphasized that technological and cultural changes command that libraries change as well. VRBP touches on this idea but takes none of it for granted. It instead asks readers to consider who and why before taking on the how and what.

Disclosure: I've spent time with Kathleen in three different countries (including Disneyland) and am predisposed to like this book.
