state-sponsored virtual reference projects

I count 20 states with State-sponsored virtual reference services and made a US Map. I could have missed some.

color coded map of the united states of virtual reference projects, by virtual reference software vendor

Color coded by vendor:

  • Red - OCLC QuestionPoint (13 states)
  • Blue - Docutek VRL plus (2 states)
  • Green - Tutor.com Ask A Librarian (4 states)
  • Yellowish - LivePerson (1 state)

I made another map that doesn't shade for different vendors.

The reason I made this map is because I always wanted to use one in a presentation, and hey, I've got a presentation coming up, so hey, there it is.

Of course, VR exists in other places as well, just not at the statewide level. LISWiki lists 43 states that have libraries with virtual reference services.

Thanks to Judy and Emily, who helped me with my geography.

updated, 9/2007

I updated the maps posted here to include Kentucky's AskWhy KY service. The old maps are still available at the URLs below.

more update!

I posted new maps in another blog post:

Gray in the map above signifies a discontinued service.
