Question by buzz@oregonlibraries.net on Thu, 07/30/2009 - 1:30pm

I am looking for ideas on where to find info about tourism statistics for different countries like Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Poland, and Czech Republic?

librarian: Hi. Welcome to L-Net. My name is Marianne, I'm a librarian at the Tigard Public Library in Oregon. Please give me a moment to read through your question.
anonymous: Sure.
librarian: Hi Anonymous - I'm starting to look now - what kind of project are you working on?
anonymous: I am doing a school marketing project.
librarian: Anonymous have you seen this site? It's from the US Gov. Office of Travel and Tourism http://tinet.ita.doc.gov/
librarian: ok now that i'm looking it seems to only be US residents stats - traveling abroad- let me keep looking
anonymous: No I have not heard about the site before.
librarian: I am going to keep looking online -- I'm also wondering if some Reference books such as the World Economic Fact Book might be good sources - have you done any research in your local library?
anonymous: Wha I am looking to do is open a business in a foregin country. I'm looking for info about: leisure activities available, what types companies produce leisure necessary products.
anonymous: Not in the local library. I haven't known on where I should start besides internet searching.
librarian: Okay, I found a site on tourism in Europe that has statistics for 38 European countries. But I am reading what you just wrote and I'm not sure that's what you need...
librarian: Are you going to choose one country?
anonymous: Do you know if the UN produces marketing info for governing countries?
anonymous: I have to narrow down the search from 6 to 1 after ranking certain aspects.
librarian: I see. So what kind of specific information (stats) will help you to narrow it down?
librarian: Anonymous - the CIA World Fact Book has lots of good information on countries, including many statistics. Here is the page on Denmark
anonymous: I'm looking for info about current sales of recreational equipment, possible info about market size on recerational equipment.
anonymous: I have used the CIA fact book recently but it didn't list about recereational activities available for the countries. I will check again.
librarian: Okay, that's more specific than what you'll find on the World Fact book.
librarian: I'm not sure that there will be a free online resource that will have stats on sales of recreational equipment in countries like Estonia and Finland...it's very specific information...do you have access to an academic library (college or university?)
anonymous: I do. Do you know if there is anything available through he Washington County Library System that is accessible via internet?
librarian: For example, here is a report about Estonia from Euromonitor International...
librarian: You have to pay for it....
librarian: But it lists "health and wellness sales"
librarian: I keep looking to see if I can find a free online source...did your teacher give you guys any leads on where to search for this kind of marketing information?
anonymous: the teacher said to contact our local librarians because they would be highly trained in knowing where to find this info. I have been searching on my own too.
librarian: Is this a college class?
anonymous: it is.
librarian: If you can tell me which school I can access their online library site and see if they might subscribe to some kind of electronic resource that would provide this info.
anonymous: that would be great. I attend Univeristy of Phoenix-Oregon Campus. OR do you know what the subscription resource is called? I can access my school's library.
librarian: I can find many general statistics for the countries you listed, but not something as specific as "recreational equipment sales"
anonymous: that's ok. You have given me quite a few resources to look at and may give me something I can use.
librarian: Anonymous, this is as far as I can get with their library: http://www.apollolibrary.com/library/default2.aspx?id=1
librarian: Maybe you have a way to log in?
anonymous: that's fine. What is the name of the subscription?
anonymous: I do have access to the school's library.
librarian: I can't tell what University of Phoenix subscribes to because I can't get past that screen that asks for students to log in. The kind of information you are looking for is more detailed than most public libraries would have - we do have some sources here that provide sales statistics for the United States. If you'd like I can refer your question on to the Multnomah County Library where they have a larger business reference collection and might have some ideas on where to find this information.
anonymous: You have done a great job helping me. I went on my school's library site and many of those places you gave me to look are included in the school's site. I will work with all you gave me.
anonymous: Thanks so much for your help. I had never used this feature before, I like it.
librarian: Anonymous the link I sent above might be a good place to start for Finland stats -- I can look for similar sites for the other countries you listed if you have a moment...
anonymous: sure, anything helps.
librarian: Okay...also I found this book online and although we can't access it online - check to see if your library has it. I bet it would give you the kind of information you are after: "European Marketing Data and Statistics 2009"
librarian: Anonymous, I'm showing Multnomah County and PSU libraries both own that book - might be worth a look or a call to Multnomah County to have them check and see if that book includes the info. you need
anonymous: Is this book at the euromonitor.com site?
librarian: Unfortunately they only show you a little of it- you have to buy it. But I imagine it's expensive.. however according to the table of contents it provides marketing info. for many of the countries you listed...
librarian: I can give you the call # for the book at the Central Library downtown if you want, or pass your question along to them...
anonymous: that's ok. thanks. I might be able to access it through my school's site. I'm trying.
librarian: Okay
librarian: That stats site I sent you from Finland looked good, but I don't see something similar for Hungary a Estonia...
anonymous: that's fine. thanks for all your help.
librarian: I'm sorry I couldn't get you excatly what you needed but hopefully put you in the right direction...
anonymous: You were great. I have a lot more info than when I started.
librarian: Thanks for using Oregon's L-Net service. Have a great day.
