Hi, I need help compiling a bibliography of writing about personal experience with drugs from the 19th century to the first half of the 20th. My best examples so far are Walter Benjamin's "On Hashish" and Aldous Huxley's "The Doors of Perception" If you could help me find similar anlaysis on psychedelic experience before Timothy Leary got involved, I would be grateful.
librarian: Hi.
librarian: It looks like we got disconnected.
librarian: I was going to ask...
librarian: Are you looking for primary sources, or can you also use secondary?
anonymous: either one is fine
librarian: Here is a site about opium use in the 1800's.
librarian: You can look at it while I search for more information.
anonymous: thanks
librarian: Those are from the University of Texas, Arlington.
librarian: Here is another site about drug use in London in the 20 century.
librarian: I'll see if I can find anything from the US.
librarian: Here is a history of drug use in the US by Elaine Casey. It is hosted by an activist group that is trying to stop the drug war called DRCNet.
librarian: Here's another historical site hosted by the University of Missouri.
librarian: Are these sites helping at all?
anonymous: the university of texas link gives me coleridge, tennyson, and keats writing about opiate use and maybe more. the other sites are a little too much
anonymous: about timelines
librarian: Here's one from the University of Buffalo.
librarian: It may be too general.
anonymous: a little general, though in scanning the articles I'm finding some mentions of what I'm looking for
librarian: Here's a site about Coleridge.
librarian: It includes a poem about a drug experience.
librarian: I guess he may be a little too early.
librarian: Sorry.
librarian: He was writing at the end of the 17th century and early 18th.
anonymous: This is good. My time constraints are flexible.
anonymous: I'm interested in his and others' self-awareness. Living the examined life of an addict
librarian: Here's a site that may help you.
librarian: Look at the references at the bottom of the page; they may be useful.
anonymous: the link isn't working for some reason. Maybe just not loading at the moment, try it again later
anonymous: works now
librarian: OKay
anonymous: looks helpful
librarian: There is a book titled _The Road To Excess: A History of Writers on Drugs_, By Marcus Boon, published by Harvard University Press. It looks like it maybe useful if you can get your hands on a copy. It covers a much broader time period, but includes what you're looking at.
anonymous: my library has it, I'll put a hold on it.
librarian: Great!
librarian: Does the information I provided help answer your question? Do you want me to look for some more information?
anonymous: this is a good start. Think I need to take some time to look it over more carefully.
librarian: Okay. Please log back in when you're ready for round 2.
anonymous: thanks a lot!
librarian: Thanks for using our service. And again, come back again if you need help with your question.
anonymous: For sure. thanks again
